Farewell

As school draws to a close this semester, I am writing my final blog for English Comp. One of our recent assignments was a paper about this class and whether we would continue our blog.

I have learned a lot about blogging this semester however I would still consider myself a definite amateur! It has been interesting surfing the net to find articles to write a "blurb" about. One thing that I can say is that I am more in tune with current and world events thanks to this class!

Blogging has now become part of my weekly schedule. I hope I continue to make time for it, bot just because it is required. Now that others have the ability to see if I am following through, that may help motivate me as well.

It has been fun reading my classmates blogs, it gives some insight as to who they are. Since we don't get to meet everyone in the class, it is nice to have some kind of contact with the other students! Regretably I will say farewell for now. I hope to continue to hear from others and I will be checking to see if you continue as well.

Have a great summer everyone! Happy Mother's Day to all who are!

How About Those Borders?

Did I write about this already? Since this is such a heated debate right now I thought I would join in!!! Arizona is wanting more regulation for their borders. First of all I would like to say, I would not want to be living in Arizona right now.

I was listening to a talk show in my car on the way to work and they were talking to a new American citizen who had just finished the legal avenue of joining us in America. She stated that the illegal Mexicans will stand out and protest with their children who are citizens holding flags of where they are from. This struck me as odd. If the place you left was so horrific that you had to sneak into our country, why would you even want to acknowledge that place let alone if you are wanting to stay in America then why would you not be waving an American flag????

Another issue I have is this. I understand wanting to better yourself or family! Why not do it legally? It is a process and yes it takes time but if you are an upstanding person who should be given the chance to better their way of life why not do it right? You sneak across the border, work illegally taking our jobs and end up with government benefits that most Americans can't even get because the system is stretched to thin. Do they realize or care that pretty soon this country may not be any better if they keep breaking the system?

This is a very touchy subject for almost everyone. Both sides taken into account! How do we find a way to help those seeking a better life while maintaining life for Americans who were already here? Where will we go if we want to improve our situation? There is no place. So why not find a way that will be of most benefit to both parties and maintain a standard of living for all involved?

Not Just Spilled Milk!

This has been happening for a little while but what the heck! As most of you know there was an oil leak that they are still trying to contain. Heading towards the sandy shores of America is a big pool of oil. Although they have been trying to contain the spill it is rather complicated in 5000 feet of ocean.

Most Americans want more drilling at home so we will not have to be so reliant on foreign oil. Yet when a boo boo happens due to a faulty piece of equipment the effects are of great magnitude. So does paying more for oil outweigh the accidents that can come along with drilling ourselves?

The first time I went to South Padre Island I thought it was so beautiful. One day while there we decided to rent dune buggies to run along the beach. Decked out in our new WHITE Padre shirts we loaded up and started "cruising" the long strip of beach that was not occupied. It was a blast! One thing that we started noticing about half way in was that all the sand that was flipping up on us was leaving black stuff all over our new WHITE shirts! What the crap was this stuff? Well it was the oil that the sand had soaked up from the last spill in the gulf. Needless to say the shirts went in the trash. It was a fun day, but the effects of that spill were not forgotten.

Now that story does not even begin to touch on all of the effects that a spill has on the environment. I guess I look at it like this. If you are going to go biking, you are supposed to wear a helmet at the least for safety. If you are dressed appropriately and have a bad wreck you can still get hurt. But the next time that you go biking you will probably try and protect the area that got hurt (if you can) before you head out.

There are risks with everything! Unfortunately sometimes we need something that hurts to remind us to be more careful. So in this case do the benefits out weigh the risks?

Close to Home!

Well, I almost don't know what to say this time. This event was all over the news and the net so I'm sure everyone has heard...but just in case you did not here goes. There was a vehicle parked at Times Square in NYC with a bomb in it. Luckily it failed to detonate, none the less someone made it and left it there!

We hear of car bombings exploding overseas all the time. Luckily, not so much here...until now.
Two vendors noticed the vehicle and alerted the police. Shortly there after smoke started coming from the vehicle. The police noted that it was a homemade bomb so to speak and that they were lucky to have dodged this one.

I believe in standing up for what you believe in but I don't consider this standing up. If you have the nerve to try and blow up people then at least blow yourself up with them. Whether this was derived from belief based on religion, hate or a wild hair are there not better ways to get your message across? I mean how credible is a "bomber" going to be if they want people to "heed" their message.

To simply instill fear and death for something that matters only to you...what gives you the right? Would you not be better served relaying your message in another fashion? I think it is weak and cowardly to hide behind a bomb as well as sick and mentally unsound to think that there is any purpose that would be served by this!!!

So...tell me how you really feel!
